Tis so sweet to Trust….

For the last couple of days the Hymn “’Tis So Sweet to Trust in Jesus” has been singing in my Spirit. I go to do my devotions and as I begin it wells up on the inside until I begin to sing it. I’m in the shower singing it again. It is so powerful. The words are simple, yet have such depth. Look at the first verse and refrain:

 ’Tis so sweet to trust in Jesus,

Just to take Him at His Word;

Just to rest upon His promise,

And to know, “Thus saith the Lord!”

 Refrain:

Jesus, Jesus, how I trust Him!

How I’ve proved Him o’er and o’er;

Jesus, Jesus, precious Jesus!

Oh, for grace to trust Him more!

Louisa Stead wrote the song in 1882, after a vacation, where she watched her husband drown well trying to rescue a small boy. Suddenly she was a young widower with a young child, without an income. She HAD to trust on the Jesus for everything. Interestingly enough she tells how she learned to trust him:

 Just to take Him at His Word;

Just to rest upon His promise,

She went to the Bible, studied it, found the promise for her circumstances, and rested upon them.

Jesus tells us in John 14:1,“Do not let your hearts be troubled.Trustin God; trust also in me.”

So what is Trust?

Trust is defined as:

  1. Firm reliance on the integrity, ability or character of a person or thing.
  2. Custody, care.
  3. Something committed into the care of another.

Jesus is saying in John 14:1, Don’t even worry, fret or get upset about things; God and I are on the scene and in charge, just have a firm reliance based on Our integrity, Our ability and Our character that we will take care of whatever you commit to Our care.

 It’s not based on our integrity or ability, it’s based on the Creator of the Universe and the Savior of the World’s. Their Character – not ours. When we have a problem or circumstance arise, run and get our Bibles, find out what the Word says, what promises we can rest upon. When we get a hold of this and it becomes a reality in our lives we to will begin to sing:

 Jesus, Jesus, how I trust Him!

How I’ve proved Him o’er and o’er;

Jesus, Jesus, precious Jesus!

Oh, for grace to trust Him more!

    Thank-you for the great message. I fell in love with this song again after hearing it in the soundtrack of the remake of the movie ‘True Grit’. The phrases, “Just to take Him at His word’ and ‘Just to rest upon His promise’ have always have stood out to me. It is the picture of faith that we all need to ascribe to.
